A Journalist’s View of the Jobs Calamity
Speaker
Richard McCormack Editor and Publisher Manufacturing & Technology News
Things don’t look good. By most measures of output, investment and job
creation, the current cyclical “recovery” is the weakest on record.
There are 3-million fewer jobs now than there were 10 years ago,
including one-third fewer manufacturing jobs. Consumer spending this
decade is at it lowest level on record since the Second World War.
Income inequality is at its highest level since the 1930s. There is a
little job growth, but mostly in non-exportable, low-wage service jobs.
And, at the bottom line, official unemployment seems stubbornly stuck at
9 percent. Against this gloomy picture, what are the future prospects
for robust job growth? Have profound changes in international
competition, the tragic debt bubble in the US, and trends in replacing
jobs with technology condemned us to be a backwater nation with many
more workers than work? Are we on our way to being far poorer than we
could ever have imagined. Or can we see the light of national
competitiveness at the end of the tunnel of recovery?
We are pleased to announce that Mr. Richard McCormack, an active
journalist and editor and publisher of Manufacturing & Technology News,
will join us on October 26 to talk about his views and insights on these
issues. Mr. McCormack’s industry newsletter covers the profound
financial and economic ramifications of outsourcing, industrial and
technological competitiveness, and government policies. It is read by
executives in industry, government and academia on five continents. Mr.
McCormack’s work has been cited by hundreds of Web and print
publications including The Washington Post, New York Times and the Wall
Street Journal.
