to join us at our May 26 Luncheon Program
with guest speaker
Dr. James N. Kimball
Chief Economist
and Director of Economics and Contracts Department
International Brotherhood of Teamsters
NOT YOUR FATHER’S UNION
New Strategies
Because It Is a New World
Technology is dramatically changing American
business—decisions are made at breakneck speeds and
the character and technical content of jobs themselves
are evolving quickly. Globalization is one major force
changing the face of the workplace. Another challenge
is the current recession.
While change is accelerating, unions appear to be
losing relevance. The percentage of American private
sector, non-agricultural workers represented by a
union is down to about 7 percent from more than 25
percent in 1950. Faced with these new realities,
unions must change their strategies and approaches to
serving workers and society.
How are unions are responding? As Chief Economist for
the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and
Director of its Economics and Contracts Department,
Dr. Jim Kimball is responsible for economic analysis
in support of major contract negotiations, a
responsibility that affects the livelihood of
thousands of Teamsters. From that background, he will
describe the challenge, detail examples of how unions
are responding innovatively to the business realities,
and offer his views on the future of labor unions. It
promises to be a fascinating talk.
