 The View from the Inside

On October 21, 2009, the Senate confirmed William Spriggs as Assistant Secretary of Labor for Policy. Dr. Spriggs will touch on his personal impressions as he transitioned from the academic arena into a high-profile government position. That personal experience will frame his discussion of policy and organizational initiatives under the new leadership in DOL.

In his new position, Dr. Spriggs is charged with leading the DOL in policy development, program implementation and evaluation, and analysis of economic trends and policies. He is well equipped for the job. Dr. Spriggs has worked for over 25 years as an educator, researcher and advocate for working families and low-income communities. Among other credentials, he was a Clinton Administration official. He led the National Urban League’s Institute for Opportunity and Equality. And he had a long affiliation with the Economic Policy Institute. At the time of his nomination, Dr. Spriggs served as chair of Howard University’s Department of Economics.
