Critical Labor Issues in Washington
It is our
privilege to announce that President Williams will be
our guest speaker at DC LERA’s June luncheon. Under
President Williams’ leadership, the Metro Washington
Council unites 175 local unions in their efforts to
improve the lives of working men and women and their
families in the Washington area. Members of the
Council represent 150,000 union members in every line
of work, from service industries and retail sales
through communications, transportation, manufacturing,
and construction industries to the public sector.
President Williams will frame his talk with a brief review
of the scope, charter, and history of the Metro
Washington Council. The focus of his talk will be
critical political, policy, and resource issues facing
organized labor, workers, and their families in the
Washington area—such as DC minimum wages laws,
increased difficulties faced by workers in obtaining
unemployment benefits, steeper barriers to organized
labor in DC schools, persistent shortfalls in health
care, the special plights of immigrants, and an
unresponsive DC government.
