The Officers and Board of the DC LERA invite you
to join them at the December Luncheon Program.
Developing Better Models of Labor
Relations for the 21st Century Noon –
Wednesday, December 14, 2011
at the historic Woman’s National Democratic Club
Speaker
Professor Joseph A.
McCartin
Executive Director,
Kalmanovitz Initiative for
Labor and the Working Poor at Georgetown University
We are pleased to announce that
Professor Joseph A. McCartin, Executive Director of the
Kalmanovitz Initiative
for Labor and the Working Poor at
Georgetown University and author of a recently released book, Collision Course: Ronald Reagan, the Air Traffic Controllers, and the
Strike that Changed America, (Oxford University Press, 2011)
will join us on December 14th to discuss a calamitous event in the
history of labor unions in America: the 1981 PATCO strike. This
conflict, he argues, transformed private sector labor relations. “When
Reagan authorized the firing of the controllers, he was legally on solid
ground, but he did that in the context of the federal sector,” McCartin
explains. Private sector employers began to emulate the president by
breaking strikes. The results for organized labor were devastating.
“It’s hard to conceive of how a union can protect its workers if they
don’t have the ability to strike effectively.” McCartin will share with
us his vision of the future in which, as Executive Director of the
Institute, he hopes to energize development of new models of labor
relations to restore the constructive role of unions.
Kalmanovitz
Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor.
This new initiative at Georgetown University, made possible by a $5
million grant from the Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation, is convening
scholars and practitioners from labor and management in an effort to
find just and equitable solutions to problems that beset labor today.
