About the speakers:
Thea Lee is Deputy Chief
of Staff at the AFL-CIO. Previously, she worked as an
international trade economist at the Economic Policy
Institute in Washington, D.C. Ms. Lee is co-author of A
Field Guide to the Global Economy , published by the New
Press. Her research projects include reports on the North
American Free Trade Agreement, on the impact of
international trade on U.S. wage inequality, and on the
domestic steel and textile industries. She has appeared on
numerous television and radio shows, including the News Hour
with Jim Lehrer; CNN; Good Morning America; NPR’s All Things
Considered and Marketplace. She serves on several advisory
committees, including the State Department Advisory
Committee on International Economic Policy and the
Export-Import Bank Advisory Committee. She received a
Bachelors degree from Smith College and a Masters degree in
economics from the University of Michigan.
Daniel J. Mitchell is a
top expert on tax reform and supply-side tax policy.
Mitchell is a strong advocate of a flat tax and
international tax competition. Prior to joining Cato,
Mitchell was a senior fellow with The HeritageFoundation,
and an economist for Senator Bob Packwood and the Senate
Finance Committee. He also served on the 1988 Bush/Quayle
transition team and was Director of Tax and Budget Policy
for Citizens for a Sound Economy. His articles can be found
in such publications as the Wall Street Journal , New York
Times, Investor's Business Daily, and Washington Times. He
is a frequent guest on radio and television and a popular
speaker on the lecture circuit. Mitchell holds bachelor's
and master's degrees in economics from the University of
Georgia and a Ph.D. in economics from George Mason
University.
