Walmart Is Coming to Washington!
Ms. Beth Pointer
Organizing Coordinator and Director,
Respect DC Campaign United Food and
Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW),
AFL-CIO
Join us over lunch for a lively discussion about Walmart's
announcement to open four stores in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Pointer will give us an inside view of the issues raised
by Walmart’s presence in the city. As the local UFCW action
person for Walmart, she will describe a new UFCW strategy
for dealing with the labor, employment and community
impacts. It centers on “Living Wages, Healthy Communities,”
a coalition of grassroots-based organizations, pastors,
workers, environmentalists, parents, students and community
members concerned about the quality of life in D.C.
communities.
The coalition’s goal is to ensure that any Walmart store
built in Washington will:
-
Treat its workers with dignity
-
Provide full-time living wage jobs with affordable
health and retirement benefits
-
Help affected neighborhoods improve their economic
standing and quality of life
|
With its new approach of building smaller neighborhood
stores, will Walmart avoid the social, labor, and community
criticisms leveled against the company’s super-big-box
projects? Will Walmart continue its resistance to
unionization in its stores in Washington? Please join us to
hear Beth Pointer’s views.
